Access Express




The Access Express reflects the STAR Center's commitment to the principle that every person with a disability should have access to the benefits of computer technology, regardless of ability level, age, income, or national origin. The STAR Center's Access Express offers specially adapted computer technology to children and adults with a variety of special needs.

Services provided on the Access Express:

Microcomputer Access Evaluations - This service aims at STAR's vocational rehabilitation clients by offering computer access evaluations. Conventional and Assistive Technology awareness training and technical assistance for vocational rehabilitation counselors and employers are offered.

Assistive Technology (AT) Evaluations - Under this service the STAR Center helps school systems find the right technologies for school-age children with disabilities. These individual evaluations ultimately assist teachers, parents, and students in developing an individual education plan for each child, including assistive technology for the classroom.

Augmentative/Alternative Communication Evaluations - This service provides communication device evaluations for children and adults with a speech impairment disability as well as device training for clients, their family members and their service providers.

Workplace and Home Accomodation Evaluations - This service provides evaluations for indivdiuals with physical/mobility or sensory impairment. Appropriate modifications and/or devices are recommended to achieve the highest level of independence in the workplace or home.

Outreach Services - This service targets school and healthcare professionals and provides AT awareness training at universities, hospitals, and conferences.

The STAR Center's Access Express is a 42-ft long mobile techonology unit that travels to 21 counties in West Tennessee. It offers hope to thousands of people with disabilities providing assistive technology evaluations and services for persons with disabilities. The idea is quite simple -- if the people can't come to us, then we can go to the people. The Access Express helps to extend the STAR Center's mission to ensure that all individuals with disabilities or other special needs maximize their potential for indepdendence and achieve their personal goals of employment, effective learning, and independent living through assistive technology, assistive aids, and support services.
