VOCATIONAL EVALUATIONS

Following a traumatic brain injury, Barry wanted guidance in choosing appropriate vocational goals. His vocational rehabilitation counselor referred Barry for a comprehensive vocational evaluation to assess his interests and abilities. Now, Barry is working on his employment training goals set by the evaluation in preparation for community employment. According to Barry, he has survived each health crisis by having God in his life and offers a this bit of advice, "If you want your kids to get rehab, send them to The STAR Center, because it is a good place."

"I've been coming to The Star Center since I was five years old. I've attended Music Therapy, Learning Lab, Art Therapy, and Orientation and Mobility training. The Star Center is a fun place to learn new things and become more independent. I believe that The Star Center will help my dreams of going to college and being independent come true."
NURSING AND PERSONAL ASSISTANCE

Being with his family has always meant the world to George. Even as his health deteriorated, he has been able to live at home and maintain a good quality of life thanks to the Nursing and Personal Assitance services he receives throug The STAR Center's DMRS Medicaid Waiver Programs. George and his family will always be grateful to The STAR Center and its caring, dedicated staff.
RECEIVABLES MANAGEMENT
Photo of Deloris. Caption BelowAfter a head on car collision and lengthy hospitalization, Deloris expressed, "I was at the bottom of the pit both mentally and physically." Encouraged by her vocational rehabilitation counselor, she came to The STAR Center for evaluation and employment training services. "Now I'm the happiest I've ever been in my life with full independence and the best job opportunities in my career thanks in a large part to the training I received in Receivables Management at The Star Center."

Caryn is a determined woman who is accomplished at using the arts as a means of communication. Caryn has limited use of her left hand, so she works to strengthen that hand while making art. Caryn uses her art abilities as a tool for rehabilitation.

Letesha is a natural artist who takes to the creative process easily. She particularly enjoys painting and uses the painting process not only to communicate visually, but also to stretch her arms and fingers, and as a forum for practicing her verbal skills.




AUGMENTATIVE COMMUNICATION

Perry White came to the STAR Center over five years ago due to his inability to verbalize his thoughts and needs. He has been using a communication device for several years now, allowing him to be more independent and confident in his day-to-day living. Perry now enjoys working at the grocery store and volunteering at the local library. He finds deeper happiness in having the freedom and ability to socialize with his friends in the community.
AUGMENTATIVE COMMUNICATION

Barbara Winbush had a stroke eighteen years ago, which left her with a severe speech impairment. A couple years ago, she received a communication device and recently after much hard work and training achieved her personal goal of becoming employed. When asked how The STAR Center changed her life she replied, "It gives me a sense of accomplishment and makes me very happy."

Music therapy offers him a time to exert control over his environment by providing opportunities for decision making and self-expression. It is exciting to observe George dancing and singing along, playing various instruments, and interacting in the music process.

Glenda is a delight to serve in Music Therapy. SHe attends music therapy training each week with a beautiful smile and such determination to learn how to communicate more effectively and how to maximize the use of her arms and hands. Her strong will and infectious laugh turns each session into a fun-filled odyssey, propelling her toward her therapeutic goals.

Photo of High Tech Training. Caption Below"I came to the STAR Center with a definite goal in mind. The staff members tailored my computer training to meet my needs. The resulting program has helped me develop new skills and strengthen old ones. The most important thing I've learned, however, is that it's ok to be me. The Center's warm atmosphere has given me courage to live life and use my talents to the fullest. The camaraderie among classmates facing similar challenges has given me strength to perservere through some difficult tasks."

With the assistance of Zoom Text and STAR training, I can now read again. I am taking STAR's High Tech and Business Management curriculums. This will lead to me being able to be gainfully employed again."


JOB PLACEMENT

Due to a stroke Barbara was left speech impaired and thereby unable to communicate with others and secure employment for over fifteen years. Barbara came to Star and received a speech device, training, and job placement assistance. Utilizing her DynaMyte communication device, Barbara secured employment as a product demonstrator where she works a part-time job interacting with the public. This is perfect for Barbara as she is such a people person. Her employer says, "I couldn't have asked for a better employee!"
